My Diabetes Anniversary

Monday 30th May 2016

Today marks the eleventh anniversary of my Diabetes diagnoses, to me personally you never forget the day you are diagnosed with this chronic medical condition.

I have had a lot of ups and downs over the years but I have always been determined to push through it all. I have never let my Diabetes stop me and I will not let it stop me now, I am very thankful that I can go do things and not be defined by my medical condition.

My hope is that as time goes on I will be okay with everything that goes on with me and everything around me, I have days where I feel like giving up but I know I can't because Diabetes does not work that way. Having Type 1 Diabetes is like being on a constant rollercoaster ride and I feel there is times where you can get off the rollercoaster, then there is other times where you might feel you can not get off the rollercoaster.

Within saying all of this, I will be okay. I have survived living with Type 1 Diabetes for eleven years and I will keep surviving.

I will keep this post short tonight, I hope you all have a great week and I will catch you next time.

Diabetes Kit

What Is In Your Diabetes Kit?

Hello, I hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday. Today I wanted to do a blog post on my diabetes kit, so all the items I use when I am doing a set change and spare items I keep inside my blood glucose meter case.

Here is a check list of the items I keep in my container;

1. Needle Cutter
2. Alcohol Wipes
3. Skin Prep
4. Clear Medical Tape
5. Tripple A Batteries
6. One 10 Cent Coin

As you can see here I have a basic plastic container, the container houses everything just nicely. This container is also easy to travel with, I don't travel to different countries but I do go on small trips and I never travel alone.

When I do go on a small trip I always pack x2 cannulas as it is very easy for me to go through  cannulas and I pack my insulin. My set change will always happen in the middle of my trip so I make sure I am well prepared.

My Blood Glucose Meter Case

Here is a check list of what I keep in my case

1. Blood Glucose Meter (obviously)
2. Finger Pricker
3. Test Strips
4. Finger Wipes
5. Spare Lancets
6. Spare Test Strips
7. Spare Finger Wipes

I always like to keep spare test strips and finger wipes with my meter, I don't want to be caught out and have nothing on me, especially when I am out and about. It is always important to keep spare lancets with your meter so you can change the lancet regularly.

I hope this post will help another Type 1 Diabetic, the photographs were taken on my iPhone 6S. Please leave me a comment, I would love to hear what you keep in your Diabetes Kit and if there is a topic you would like to me write about just let me know.

I hope you have had a lovely weekend and I will catch you next time

Hello, Welcome To My Blog

Hello

Hello, my name is Jenna. I am 26 years old and I have Type One Diabetes for almost eleven years. I have been on my insulin pump for roughly five years now and I can tell you being on an insulin pump has been the best decision of my life.

I have been wanting to start a blog for quite sometime, a place where I can talk about the issues and the struggles being an adult with type one diabetes. So within saying this, my blog is more directed at the adults rather than children and teenagers. Other things I would like to discuss include; going out for meals, relationships and dating, traveling, diabetes items and I am sure there is lots of other things to be discussed.

I would like to share my story from when I was diagnosed with type one. It all started on the 27th May 2005, it was a Friday. I was at school and I rang my Mum during lunch and asked her to make a doctor appointment for me. I had a constant head cold and thrush that I could not get rid off, I vaguely remember saying to mum I'm over having this cold. It was something a long those lines.

I do not remember much over the weekend to be honest, by Monday morning I could not move. I could not get out of bed, it was around 8am and Mum came in and said "are you going to school?" and I said "I can't move". Mum rang the Doctor and got me in thank heavens, All I remember is the Doctor taking my blood glucose level which was 18.6, also done the urine in a cup and the Doctor checked for Ketones and I had Ketones. I was then on my way to the Hospital. By the time I got to the Hospital I was 24.6 I think but that is because I had a lemonade, that was all I wanted before we went to the Hospital.

I don't think I had to wait long sitting in the emergency department, I was then hooked up to fluids and asked questions by the specialist and the registra. Before I was diagnosed I had done the four kilometre School Cross Country Run, the specialist was quite shocked. I had the symptoms of Type One for close to twelve months it was not until Monday the 30th May 2005 that I was finally diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. I will never forget the day or the date. You never forget details like that.

I will post photographs and I am happy to share my stories and I hope to hear your stories, can I ask that you please be kind as this is my very first blog post. I will be posting weekly, I am not sure about a schedule yet. Please feel free to leave a comment, if you have any recommendations or subjects you would like me to discuss I am happy to take it on board.

Until next time
